The Status and the way forward of ICT Curriculum in Ethiopian Secondary Schools

This paper presents the result of a research of ICT education in Ethiopian secondary schools, its status of implementation and suggests the way forward for future ICT education. The aim was to obtain an indication of the drawbacks of ICT curriculum. The research, with a convenience sample, was carried out using questionnaire, Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and observation (using a check list). The research revealed that ICT education in Ethiopian secondary schools has serious problems such as inappropriate contents, lack of resources and insufficient teachers’ knowledge and skills. The research concluded that the teachers in most secondary schools are not qualified for the level. The study also revealed that schools have no sufficient resources like hardware, software and Internet connection to teach ICT. We also found that the teaching/learning materials such as textbooks and teachers guides were not developed in suitable way. This paper outlines the problems of teaching ICT as a subject in Ethiopian high schools and recommends actions for improvement.
